The Real First School

The point was made in an article that Timber School was the first one-room schoolhouse in the Conejo Valley (“Reconstructing the Past” May 26). This is an error.

A check with the county superintendent of schools office will reveal that the Conejo district was formed in 1877. In her “Tales of Triunfo” (copyright 1985), Patricia Russell Miller devotes Chapter VI to the Conejo School. In it she describes how her father and then she graduated from the Conejo School. She states that it was built in 1877. A painting of the school from the 1920s by her sister Margaret Russell is depicted.
