SANTA ANA : Staff, Programs Cut by Rancho Santiago
Hit hard by reduced funding from the state, the Rancho Santiago College board has adopted its preliminary budget, which calls for cuts in programs and staff and no raises for employees.
Under the $94.9-million spending plan approved by the college board, the district will provide the same number of regular courses during the year but will reduce the number of summer school offerings.
The budget calls for cuts in printing supplies, travel and conferences for teachers, as well as reductions in library hours and some personnel.
The personnel reductions were expected to be approved Monday night.
Personnel Director Elizabeth Harris said the board was expected to lay off 15 part-time clerks, instructional assistants and other personnel, and to reduce the hours of 15 other employees. There were no faculty cuts.
In his report to the board, Vice Chancellor Stephen G. Garcia blamed falling lottery revenue and cuts in state funding for much of the district’s financial problems.
