LOS ANGELES : Police Commissioners Offer Praise for Gates

Share

Police Commissioners Stanley K. Sheinbaum and Jesse A. Brewer, two of outgoing Police Chief Daryl F. Gates’ harshest critics, departed from the usual verbal warfare Tuesday at the last commission meeting before Gates retires and commended him for his years of service and department loyalty.

Brewer, a retired assistant police chief, cited Gates’ innovations and creativity. But it was Sheinbaum, the commission president and a key figure in Gates’ ouster, who waxed sentimental about their often contentious relationship--and drew groans from a commission gadfly who is a staunch admirer of the chief.

“On a personal basis, and this will surprise some people, I will miss him,” Sheinbaum said, denying that he ever said “the chief ought to go.”

“The chief and I have an odd relationship,” Sheinbaum said. “There were times when we were very friendly. There was a lot of humor between us--and a lot of toughness. And I’d rather deal with somebody I can be tough with. They know where I’m coming from and I know where they’re coming from. So in some ways I will regret that he won’t be here.”
