Timothy Hawkins, a former Los Angeles Times staff writer who continued to contribute men’s fashion news to The Times and other publications as a free-lance writer, died Tuesday.

He was 44 and died in New York City of the complications of AIDS.

Hawkins won several awards for his work, including Atrium, Aldo and Woolmark honors, all benchmark prizes in the fashion industry.

“Tim had a keen eye for fashion and he always called the shots as he saw them,” said Chip Tolbert of the Men’s Fashion Assn., which presents the Aldo prize each year.
