Snack lovers looking for a new thrill may see orange potato chips one day.

Orange spuds turned up in experimental crosses of potatoes collected in the Andes, Agriculture Department researchers say. USDA geneticist Charles R. Brown found them in a test plot in Prosser, Wash.

Potato breeders who work for snack companies have requested samples.

“We’re interested in them because their novelty might boost consumer appeal,” said Bob Hoopes, a geneticist with Frito-Lay in Rhinelander, Wis.
