Glendora : Dispute Over Panel Selection
Unable to agree on how commission appointees should be selected, the City Council split 3-2 Tuesday in appointing Antione L. Garabet, a doctor, to a vacancy on the Planning Commission.
The method of selecting commissioners came into dispute at the council’s previous meeting when Councilman Marshall Mouw suggested that the number of candidates the commission recommends to the council be expanded.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Mouw and Councilwoman Lois Shade voted against the appointment.
Mouw said later that his vote reflects his belief that the selection process should be broadened to ensure that representatives from all segments of the community are considered.
In addition, he said that although he now supports Garabet, he believes that there were more qualified people for the job.
Shade said a Planning Commission recommendation is not enough information on which to judge a person for a position on the commission.
Instead, she suggested that the city return to the earlier process of letting the mayor select candidates for the commission.
