‘Fly Away’ Writers in the Running for Humanitas Prizes

Writers from three “I’ll Fly Away” episodes are in the running for cash awards in the 18th annual Humanitas Prizes, which reward the writers of TV programs judged to “most fully enrich the viewing audience.”

The first-year NBC drama captured two nominations in the category for 60-minute programs, which carries a $15,000 prize, and another in the category for programs 90 minutes or longer, which carries a $25,000 prize.

Another first-year program, CBS’ “Brooklyn Bridge,” won two nominations in the list of 24 finalists in six categories.

Winners of the awards, presented by the Pacific Palisades-based Human Family Educational and Cultural Institute, will be named July 8.

The nominees:

* 60-minute programs: Henry Bromell (“I’ll Fly Away: Amazing Grace,” NBC); Kevin Arkadie (“I’ll Fly Away: Coming Home,” NBC); Gary David Goldberg (“Brooklyn Bridge: When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” CBS).

* 90-minute programs: Joshua Brand, John Falsey (“I’ll Fly Away (pilot),” NBC; Ann Beckett (“The Broken Cord,” ABC); John Wells, John Sacret Young, Carol Flint, Lydia Woodward (“China Beach: Hello . . . Goodbye,” ABC).

* 30-minute programs ($10,000 prize): Craig Hoffman (“The Wonder Years: Hardware Store,” ABC); John Masius (“Brooklyn Bridge: Boys of Summer,” CBS); Glenn Berenbeim (“A Different World: Mammy Dearest,” NBC); Chuck Lorre, Jeff Abugov, Michael Poryes (“Roseanne: This Old House,” ABC).

* PBS/Cable ($25,000 prize): Cynthia Whitcomb (“Mark Twain and Me,” Disney Channel); Sara Flanigan (“Wildflower,” Lifetime); William Schmidt, Stephen Stept (“Darrow,” PBS).

* Children’s live action ($10,000 prize): Bennett Tramer (“A Home for Christmas (Part 2),” NBC); Joseph Maurer (“Dedicated to the One I Love,” CBS); Pamela Douglas (“Different Worlds,” CBS).

* Children’s animation ($10,000 prize): Bruce Reid Schaefer (“The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” ABC); Karl Geurs, Mark Zaslove (“The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too,” ABC); Doug Molitor (“Captain Planet: The Ark,” syndicated).
