An airman who disappeared in 1987 and was presumed dead was charged Thursday with desertion, larceny and bigamy, U.S. Air Force officials said.

An independent Air Force officer will investigate the charges against Sgt. James Doug Pou, 32, to determine whether enough evidence exists to go to trial and what type of court should convene, the Air Force said in a statement.

Pou was arrested June 10 in San Diego by agents of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and is being held at March Air Force Base near Riverside.
