Is Killing a Good Idea for the Outdoor Page?

Share

In Rich Roberts’ outdoor notes on June 24, he quotes Boyd Gibbons of the California Department of Fish and Game on how he would expose inner-city children to the natural world. He would take them fishing. “There’s nothing like having a fish on your line, and a child that feels that is hooked--just like the fish.”

Do we want to give children, inner city or other, the lesson that killing animals for sport is an acceptable activity? Their lives are too filled with killing right now. Why not the lesson that killing anything for fun isn’t acceptable behavior?

It is not necessary to kill an animal to enjoy or understand nature. In fact, one becomes alienated from nature when approaching it with the idea of causing death.
