Mt. Soledad Cross

Helen McKenna’s letter (June 14) does indeed paint a strange picture when she struggles to accept that most voters approved transferring the Mt. Soledad Memorial Cross to a nonprofit private corporation. She has all the city officials violating the Constitution if they transfer the land, and all Christians denying the religious nature of the cross symbol.

Don’t fret so much, dear lady. If I were to take your polygraph test, I could truthfully answer “yes” to both questions--as all those voting yes probably could do readily.

“Is that cross first and foremost a war memorial to you?” The Mt. Soledad Cross (“that cross”) is to most of us a memorial symbol. Of course, a cross is a religious symbol, but crosses have long been used as memorial markers--and were the original symbol for “X marks the spot.”
