A 12-year-old girl died while swimming in a pool at a friend’s home early Friday evening, police said.

Blane Duprey was taken to Humana Hospital-West Anaheim where she was pronounced dead, said Police Lt. Tom Lucenti. The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. in a back-yard pool at the 7900 block of Goldenrod Circle.

Blane and three friends ranging in age from 8 to 13 were swimming in the pool when she began to struggle to stay afloat, Lucenti said. She then stopped kicking and flopped her head back into the water.

Her father, Marc, said that the girl was a fine swimmer and that the coroner believes she may have had a stroke while in the pool.

“It is kind of a mystery to everybody,” Duprey said. “There was nothing anybody could do.”

Blane’s three friends pulled her to the side of the pool but were unable to lift her body completely out, Lucenti said. Instead one of the friends held her head above water while another called police.

Paramedics transported her to the hospital as she died.
