Riot Victim

Once again we are trying to raise our voices in print; this time responding to the article (June 21) concerning victims of the riots. Howard Allen Epstein was not just a statistic (whose age was never verified by any newsman). Howard was flesh and blood--a human being who never harmed a soul--who hired minorities and cared about them. He was a son, a husband, a father, a brother, a friend.

His death was witnessed by the “hostile” people on the street who robbed him--so that the body they towed away in his car was unidentified for 24 hours. The witnesses would not identify the killers because he was “white” and they “hate whites” and they “hate police.”

Our grandson, who adored his uncle, and who still believes in the good of all mankind, black and white, has authored a “Peace Movement”--a resolution he singly had passed in the state Assembly and the state Senate--and earlier this month a proclamation by the mayor and the City Council. Not a word was covered by the media, which chronicled the Rodney King beating daily.

Do the witnesses to our son’s murder sleep well at night?

Who knows who the next victims of the killers might be?
