Court Ruling on Prop. 13

Share

Every time I read about how the overturning of Prop. 13 would harm people on limited and fixed incomes, I can’t believe my eyes. These “poor” people are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. And we, as young homeowners, are subsidizing their equity and their government services by paying up to 10 times the property taxes as these people.

Isn’t there a law that prevents senior citizens from losing their homes when they can’t afford their taxes? That defers payment until the property is sold or upon their death?

I’m not talking about having everyone pay to the level I’m paying. That would be giving Sacramento too much of our money. Also, revenue raised from property taxes should be tied to a balanced budget. Not to the fluctuation in property values.

I have several ideas on how the property tax burden can be fairly shared and at the same time keep a cap on spending. I hope that Prop. 13 is not such a sacred cow that it prevents tax reformers and legislators from also coming up with some good ideas.
