Unusually Strong Summer Storm Hits Northern California
An unusual summer storm spread rain over much of Northern California on Monday, forcing the cancellation of the San Francisco Giants baseball game and causing traffic snarls.
The rain came from “unusually strong system from the Gulf of Alaska,” said meteorologist Duane Dykema of the National Weather Service.
Normally in late June there is high pressure firmly entrenched over Northern California, said Dykema. The high pressure keeps storms out of the region.
More than three inches of rain had fallen in parts of the Shasta-Siskiyou mountains, the Weather Service reported. Willits in Mendocino County reported two inches and the town of Ross in Marin County got more than an inch, officials said.
San Francisco recorded about one-quarter of an inch of rain by 5 p.m. Santa Rosa had more than half an inch.
