Service Scheduled for Max Lerner

A memorial service for Max Lerner, the distinguished liberal professor and journalist who taught at United States International University, will be held tonight at the Scripps Ranch campus of the university.

Lerner, 89, died June 5 in a New York hospital after a stroke.

Lerner began lecturing at USIU in 1974 and continued teaching there until 1989.

Some of his books include “It Is Later Than You Think,” 1938; “Ideas Are Weapons,” 1939; “The World of the Great Powers,” 1947; “The Unfinished Country,” 1959, and “Tocqueville and American Civilization,” 1966.

Besides teaching at USIU, Lerner taught at Brandeis University for 25 years, Harvard University, Williams College, Sarah Lawrence College, Pomona College, the University of Florida and the University of Notre Dame, and had been a columnist whose work was distributed for more than two decades by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate.

The memorial service begins at 6 p.m. in Zable Hall, 10455 Pomerado Road in Scripps Ranch. Memorial contributions can be made to the USIU Max Lerner Annual Lecture Series. Contributions can be sent to the Office of the President, USIU, 10455 Pomerado Road, San Diego, 92131.
