A Gold Medal Performance in Volunteering

Mary Ann Barlow of Pasadena was one of 10 individuals and groups statewide to receive the Distinguished Volunteer Service Award by California Special Olympics.

Barlow has been the volunteer area director of the Pasadena Special Olympics for 13 years. Under her leadership, the Pasadena program has grown from 37 athletes to 260 and from three sports to nine.

California Special Olympics provides a year-round program of sports training and competition for mentally retarded children and adults.

Allen Howard has been appointed curator of plant collections at the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum in Arcadia. He has been a biologist at the Arboretum since 1989.

In his new position, he will oversee the plant introduction program, expanding the collections and focusing on smaller, more colorful trees and shrubs.

Howard graduated from Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture in Pennsylvania and earned his master’s degree from the University of North Carolina.

Chris Bradley and Russ Haynes, Claremont police officers, have been given “10851 Awards” by the California Highway Patrol and the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The awards recognize law-enforcement officers for superior efforts in recovering stolen vehicles and the arrest of thieves. The award title refers to the auto-theft section of the California vehicle code.

Bradley received the “Master 10851 Award” because this is the fifth time he has been recognized. During the past year, Bradley’s efforts led to the recovery of 12 stolen vehicles and four arrests. Since 1987, he has recovered 63 vehicles valued at $374,377.

This is the second award for Haynes, who also recovered 12 stolen vehicles resulting in four arrests in the past year. Since 1989, Haynes has helped recover 29 stolen vehicles with a value of $224,550.

Since 1987, Claremont police officers have recovered 674 stolen vehicles valued at $4.6 million.
