A 3-year-old boy kidnaped from a Long Beach day care center and abandoned in a burning car had to have parts of all four fingers and the thumb on his right hand amputated, according to hospital officials.

Surgeons also performed a procedure Tuesday to improve the condition of Samuel Jones Jr.’s left leg, which sustained very deep burns, to allow future skin grafts, according to a statement by County-USC Medical Center.

Samuel, who suffered third-degree burns over more than 60% of his body and lung damage from smoke inhalation, was listed in critical condition, the hospital said.

Samuel was taken from a Long Beach day care center May 26 by Belinda Crawford, authorities said. Crawford, 28, was a co-worker and friend of Samuel’s mother, police said. She is accused of driving the boy to Los Angeles, stepping out of the car and setting it on fire. A passerby pulled the boy from the car.
