College Tuition

Share

I recently read a story about a 77-year-old grandmother graduating from Southwestern Community College. The article pointed out that 15% of the students at Southwestern are over age 40, and many are there for “personal satisfaction.”

Unfortunately, the glow from this story fades when one looks at the $11-billion deficit in the state budget. How can this bankrupt state afford to pay for such frivolous education while charging only $50 tuition a semester?

It is ludicrous for taxpayer to offer this essentially free education to anyone, regardless of financial or vocational need. We must drastically raise the tuition for all who can pay. For students who need help, loans can be made available.

This free ride on the backs of the taxpayers must cease.
