Y’s Way to Budget Lodging Around the World : From Hong Kong to Seattle, rooms are available through the YMCA in New York.

The Y’s Way, a network of budget hotels operated by the YMCA of greater New York, is offering accommodations for an average rate of $30 a night at 38 locations in the United States, Canada, Western Europe and the Far East. Single and twin rooms are available for both men and women. Many of the hotels also offer swimming pools plus sport and fitness facilities.

An advantage of the Y network is that budget travelers, for just a little more than double the price in many youth hostels, get a private room. Although the program was developed to assist young travelers, there are no age restrictions.

Twenty-eight of the Y’s Way facilities are in North America, and they tend to be less expensive than the facilities abroad. The other foreign cities with YMCAs that are part of the network include London; Kowloon and Wanchai in Hong Kong, and Auckland, New Zealand.

Reservations, which must be arranged in advance, can be made through the YMCA central reservations office for a fee of $3 per location in North America, and $5 for each reservation in a foreign country.

The program accepts only traveler’s checks, cashier’s checks, U.S. dollar money orders and certified checks in U.S. dollars that are negotiable at New York banks, including Chase Manhattan, Chemical, European American or Citibank. Visa and MasterCard are accepted only if your booking request arrives two months prior to your arrival date.

The Y’s Way also offers economical “do-it-yourself” tour packages for Seattle, Washington, D.C., New York and New Orleans, among other cities. The packages include accommodations, some meals and sightseeing.

For example, budget travelers heading for New York City can buy a three-night package that includes accommodations at the Vanderbilt YMCA, three continental breakfasts, one dinner in Chinatown, a visit to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, a bus tour of Lower New York, and a Circle Line boat tour (a three-hour cruise around Manhattan Island) for $193 single or $148 per person for twin accommodations.

The same package with four nights’ accommodations and breakfast costs $239 single or $179 per person, double. The seven-night version, which also includes a visit to the Empire State Building and the Guinness World Records Exhibit Hall, costs $366 single or $270 per person, twin.

Among the YMCAs in the Y’s Way network is the Jerusalem International YMCA, which was built in 1933 and has been called the most beautiful YMCA building in the world.
