Traffic Problems

Public/private cooperation such as that described in “Cities, Business Offer Ideas for Easing Gridlock” (June 24) is our best hope for easing this region’s traffic problems. Too many people currently commute alone because they feel they have no practical alternatives. Our 1992 “State of the Commute” study shows that commuters want options that complement their lifestyle, not complicate it.

Creative solutions such as telebusiness centers and combining child-care facilities with park-and-ride lots address some of the most critical commuter concerns. We must support funding for these and other commuter-targeted programs.

Kudos go out those cities and businesses that have already joined efforts to expand commute alternatives. We can win the fight against gridlock, but it requires a commitment from us all.
