MOORPARK : Council, School Board to Confer

Share

The Moorpark City Council will hold a joint meeting Wednesday with the board of the Moorpark Unified School District to discuss development proposals for the former site of the local high school and other issues.

Mayor Paul W. Lawrason Jr. said the city still wants to buy the lower athletic fields of the site at 280 Casey Road to develop a downtown park, although the school district won a court battle over the issue earlier this year.

The state Supreme Court ruled in December that the school district is not required to sell the athletic fields to the city for a price below market value, as the city had contended.

Since the ruling, district officials have indicated that they are interested in selling the fields to the city for a park, Lawrason said.

But “it has boiled down to an agreement on price,” he said.

In addition, school officials want to tie the city’s proposal for the downtown park to the district’s proposal to use the rest of the former school site for development of hundreds of housing units, Lawrason said. School officials have proposed to either sell or lease the property to a developer, with the income going to the district.

The school district and city will discuss several other issues at Wednesday’s meeting, including a planned tutoring program.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
