SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : Swindler Gets 60 Days on Caltrans Work Crew

Share

A Van Nuys man was sentenced to 60 days on a Caltrans work crew Monday after being convicted of swindling San Fernando Valley homeowners by collecting down payments for roofing work that he never completed, Los Angeles City Atty. Jim Hahn said.

John Rocky Yanis, 30, was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service in addition to the Caltrans work.

Los Angeles Municipal Court Judge Susan Isacoff also placed Yanis on three years’ unsupervised probation and ordered him to pay $2,950 in restitution to six homeowners, said Deputy City Atty. Ellen Pais, who handled the case.

Yanis, who operated A-1 Consolidated Roofing, pleaded no contest--the legal equivalent of a guilty plea for criminal court purposes--to one count each of making a false statement and fraud through the use of a bogus contractor’s license, and two counts of falsely advertising himself as a licensed contractor.
