LONDON —
Northern Ireland’s main political parties held an unprecedented first day of formal talks with the government of the Irish Republic on Monday in search of a peace formula to end more than two decades of violence in the British province.
Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds and British Prime Minister John Major sent a statement wishing the delegates success.
It is hoped that the talks can lead to a breakthrough in British efforts to find a way to return Northern Ireland to local government.
