SANTA CLARITA : Housing Proposed on Old Refinery Site

Share

An oil company is seeking permission from Santa Clarita to build an apartment complex and a business park on the site of a former oil refinery.

The city will hold a public meeting July 16 to discuss the proposal by Honda Oil Co. to develop the former Newhall Oil Refinery, a 117-acre site just southeast of the intersection of Sierra Highway and San Fernando Road. The refinery closed in 1989 after more than 60 years in operation.

The site is zoned for heavy manufacturing and agriculture. The oil company wants to build about 948,000 square feet of office space and 12 apartment units. Under the proposal, the company would remove 174 of 1,014 oak trees on the property.

An environmental report on the project is being prepared and should be available by September, said Jeff Chaffin, a Santa Clarita city planner. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd.
