Chargers Sign Their 11th-Round Draft Pick McAfee

The Chargers signed 11th-round draft pick Keith McAfee, a 6-foot, 214-pound running back from Texas A&M; on Tuesday.

McAfee, who gained 999 yards on 213 carries and averaged 4.8 yards a carry his senior year with the Aggies, was the Chargers’ 12th choice in the NFL draft and the 285th overall selection. He became the second Charger draft pick to sign. Chris Mims signed June 5.

BASEBALL

Bill Almon, the Padres No. 1 pick overall in the 1974 amateur draft, was named coach at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Almon, 39 and a Brown alumnus, played 12 years in the majors before retiring in 1988.

HORSE RACING

Alpine’s Viejas Casino and Turf Club and Lakeside’s Barona Casino are among the newest of Del Mar’s 18 Inter Track Wagering satellites. The Big Fresno Fair and the Tulare County Fair also have added satellites for the upcoming 43-day race meeting, which begins July 29 and runs through Sept. 16 at Del Mar.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. has completed a deal with Prime Network. The network will broadcast six of the WPVA’s summer tour events on a delayed basis to its 15 regional affiliates.

The first event, the Coors Light Cape Cod Open, will be aired sometime during the week of Aug. 4. The tour’s final stop, the World Championship at Manhattan Beach, will be broadcast the week of Sept. 8.
