Countywide : 2nd Agency Adopts Rape Crisis Hotline

Share

Abandoned by its financially troubled founding agency, the Rape Crisis Hotline has been adopted by a second Ventura County agency in a month.

The Ventura-based Coalition Against Household Violence began operating the 24-hour-a-day hot line on July 1, a week after the state Office of Criminal Justice awarded an $83,400 grant to the agency for its operation.

The change came as a surprise to officials with Interface Children, Family Services of Ventura County, which a month before had stepped in to sponsor the hot line after the bankruptcy of the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center of Ventura County.

Charles Watson, executive director of Interface, said the agency ended its sponsorship after a state grant for the service was awarded to the Coalition Against Household Violence.

Watson said Interface has laid off two employees who were supervising the hot line when the agency acquired it from the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center.

The new telephone number for the 24-hour Rape Crisis Hotline is 656-1111.
