TECATE, Mexico — A homicide detective was recovering in a hospital Wednesday after becoming the fourth police officer in the Tijuana-Tecate border zone to be shot in the past week.
Francisco Javier Osuna, chief of the homicide group for the State Judicial Police in Tecate, was shot Monday outside a liquor store, where he was investigating a slaying that had occurred two weeks earlier.
Upon arriving at the store, Osuna allegedly was confronted by the owner, Luis Ramon Jasso Ramos, who is accused of firing a shot at Osuna. Osuna said he drew his own gun, but that Jasso fired again, hitting him in the neck before fleeing.
Osuna was taken to Hospital del Prado in Tijuana for treatment. Jasso later turned himself into authorities, state police said.
Osuna was the fourth law enforcement officer in the area to be shot since Saturday. Since then, one municipal officer was killed and two municipal officers wounded in a series of apparently unrelated shootings. Police said no suspect have been arrested in those shootings.
