Countywide : Park Bars Camping During Construction

Share

Beginning Monday, individual and family campgrounds at O’Neill Regional Park in Lake Forest will be closed because of construction until the end of November, park officials said Wednesday.

Tim Miller, manager of the county’s regional parks, said the picnic and camping areas in the west end of the park--the oldest section--are being rehabilitated. All-day use of the park and reservation-only youth camping will still be available during construction, Miller said.

O’Neill is the second oldest park in the county, having opened in 1948.

The $1.4-million project includes re-vegetation of 398 acres in the park as well as building new roads and shelter facilities and creating a recreational vehicle camping area and a group picnic area. The main picnic area at Oak Grove will also be revamped, Miller said.

The project is the first phase of a larger plan to upgrade the 2,300-acre park, Miller added. Future phases have not yet been scheduled.
