LOS ANGELES : City Panel OKs Measure to Limit Terms of Mayors
A Los Angeles City Council committee on Thursday approved a proposed charter amendment that would limit mayors to two consecutive four-year terms.
The full council is expected to decide next week whether to order a draft of the measure to place on the November ballot, city officials said.
City Councilman Richard Alatorre, a member of the Rules and Elections Committee, said the measure would not affect Mayor Tom Bradley, who has served five terms. The amendment, which was proposed by City Council President John Ferraro, is among five the council is considering for the Nov. 3 ballot.
The others include a property tax to add 1,000 officers to the Los Angeles Police Department, a $235-million bond measure to upgrade the city’s emergency communications network, and a $1.5-billion bond measure to finance improvements to the waste water system.
