FOUNTAIN VALLEY : City Awards $400,000 for Fire Station Work

Share

The City Council awarded a $400,000 contract this week to J.H. Rives Co. to remodel 25-year-old Fire Station No. 2.

Several of the improvements are designed to bring the station house up to fire and building codes, said Battalion Chief Larry Hammer.

The building, at 16767 Newhope St., will get lower windows in the dormitory that will allow firefighters to escape in case of fire, new fire sprinklers throughout and a handicapped-accessible bathroom.

Contractors will build a new hose tower, storage room, workshop and workout room and install physical fitness equipment. Builders will replace the large doors that enclose the fire engines, refurbish other bathrooms, install new lockers in the dormitory and give a face lift to the kitchen cabinets.

They will also convert a locker room into a laundry room and small library.

“This is the first time anything’s been changed” since the station house was built in 1967, Hammer said. Fire Station No. 1 was remodeled three years ago.

Construction will begin immediately and take about three months. The nine firefighters stationed there will have to work around the construction, Hammer said.

The council approved an additional $40,000 for the project, in case some unexpected construction problems arise.
