Barlow on Four-Man Team That Wins Kayak Race-Off

San Diego’s Chris Barlow and three others won a 1,000-meter kayak race-off Saturday at Lake Placid, N.Y. and will represent the United States in the event at the Olympics in Barcelona.

Barlow, Mark Hamilton of Costa Mesa, Mike Herbert of Rogers, Ark., and Terry Kent of Rochester, N.Y., won the flat-water race in 3 minutes 2.91 seconds. The other kayak--paddled by Mitch Kahn of San Clemente, Curt Bader of Bloomfield, Iowa, Michael Harbold of Honolulu, and Peter Newton of Honolulu--finished in 3:05.13.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Carlsbad High’s Vanessa Nygaard has been named to the AAU/USA 16-under All-American team after leading San Diego’s Police Athletic League’s select team to a ninth-place finish in a 48-team field at the recent Junior Olympic National Basketball Championships in Clovis, N.M.

Nygaard, the Times All-County Player of the Year and an All-San Diego Section first team selection, averaged 19 points a game and 9.4 rebounds in eight games for PAL. She received the most votes of the 15 All-American team members.

STICKBALL

The West Coast Stickball Tournament will be today from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on B Street between Third and Eighth avenues in Downtown San Diego.

Teams of five to seven players are eligible and are guarantee three games to compete is the tournament, sponsored by the Central City Assn. Up to 60 teams are expected to participate at a cost of $50 per team.
