Real-Time ‘Tosca’: Following a true-to-Puccini timetable, a cast led by tenor Placido Domingo staged a live version of “Tosca” in Rome over the weekend, singing the opera at noon, night and the following morning in the actual Roman church, palace and castle where the composer set the action. The production, with Catherine Malfitano in the title role, was broadcast live to millions of viewers in about 50 countries. During the opera, conductor Zubin Mehta cued the orchestra and chorus from a television production center. There was one mishap: Domingo took a fall during Act I, but was not seriously hurt. The production did not air in the United States over the weekend, but is scheduled on PBS in the fall.
