Navy Man Identified as Shooting Victim
A man who was fatally shot at a Montecito Heights street party was identified Sunday as Jose Lugo, 20, a Navy construction worker stationed at Port Hueneme in Ventura County, Los Angeles police said.
Lugo was killed when a gang member opened fire with an automatic weapon on a crowd of revelers at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, police said. Six people were wounded.
Police said some of the 100 party-goers tried to assure a carload of young gang members that they were not affiliated with any of the “sets” that prowl the area, but one gang member drew an automatic rifle and started shooting.
Detective Larry Martinez and family members said Lugo was attending the party while on a weekend liberty from Port Hueneme, where his Seabee construction unit is stationed.
