Study Says Layoffs to Slow in California: A survey of more than 230 California companies employing 600,000 workers found that 16.6% of the firms plan layoffs this year. That would mark a decline in layoffs from last year, when more than a third of the companies reduced their work forces by an average of 9.1%. However, the study--conducted by the consulting firm William M. Mercer Inc.--also found that only 28.5% of the companies plan to add employees this year, the same as last year.
