World IN BRIEF : AUSTRALIA : Rescuers Save 39 Beached Whales

Navy helicopters and volunteers rescued 44 pilot whales beached north of Sydney, but five of the whales died before they could be hauled back out to sea. The whales were brought by four-wheel-drive vehicle and helicopter to a fenced-in retaining pond, where officials hope they will gain strength before being sent back into the ocean.
