Politics of the Abortion Issue
It was with interest that I read the article by Susan Estrich (“What Women Want,” Opinion, July 5). Estrich claims that “ . . . as a people, we are overwhelmingly pro-choice.” To what data is she referring? If it is a poll in which the words rights and prohibit are used, that would be true. If it is one in which protecting a baby is mentioned, then it is the exact opposite.
All of this is academic. The professor has no proof that a “fetus” is “part” of a women’s body. As a matter of fact, the entire body of scientific evidence points the other way. Since when did a woman acquire two brains for a few months? Since when did she suddenly grow a “part” of her that has a distinctly different DNA pattern?
The truth of the matter is that science does not lie. “Viability” be hanged. It is a subjective term and involves a value judgment. Nothing will ever alter the fact that an unborn child is a living human being. Not articles by law professors. Nor Supreme Court decisions. Nor screaming or waving signs or chanting “pro-choice” mantras on the steps of the Capitol.
It is about time America woke up and started to take a good, hard objective look at this issue. Forget the polls and look at facts we can prove.
