A Los Angeles-based foundation has donated $100,000 toward building new headquarters in Ventura and Oxnard for the Salvation Army, corps officials said Thursday.

The donation came from the Weingart Foundation, which gives to nonprofit charities in Southern California in the form of seed money and building grants to support programs for children and teen-agers.

The money brings donations to 70% of the $1.2 million needed for the Ventura building and 84% of the $1.7 million needed for the building that will serve Oxnard and Port Hueneme, said Maj. Eddie Patterson, head of the Salvation Army in Ventura.

The Ventura corps’ new headquarters will be built to replace its current headquarters, which are to be renovated into a long-term transitional shelter for women, children and families, Patterson said.

The Oxnard corps’ new headquarters will have nearly triple the space of the Salvation Army’s existing 38-year-old, 3,400-square-foot building. The extra space will be used to provide more room for programs for teen-agers and the elderly, said Lt. Barry White, head of that branch.

“It’s an important donation,” Patterson said. The Salvation Army is seeking about $700,000 in donations for both cities’ headquarters to reach full funding, he said.
