World 3,000-meter steeplechase champion Moses Kiptanui quit the Kenyan team that will compete in Barcelona because of a knee injury and tendon problems. Kiptanui pulled out “rather than risk depriving someone of a place and being forced to withdraw later.”

Wilfred Kirochi, whose time of 3:33.04 in the 1,500 meters at the Nice Grand Prix Wednesday night was the fastest in the world this year, did not make the Kenyan squad, which was set July 10.

Five-time world cross-country champion and 5,000-meter Seoul gold medalist John Ngugi and world 800-meter champion Billy Konchellah join Kiptanui and Kirochi in the list of notable absentees from Kenya’s Barcelona squad.
