Complaint About ‘Batman Returns’ Rates a Response

Share

In response to the letter (June 27) from the disgruntled parent who took his young child to see the movie “Batman Returns” and was surprised when he discovered that the film contained scenes of violence that caused some anxiety in the child, I should remind the parent of one very important fact. The film is rated PG-13. A brief definition of this particular rating category is: “Parents strongly cautioned: some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.”

Since the child referred to in the letter was under the age of 13, this parent should have been more responsible in choosing this film for the child to view. The movie industry recommends, through its rating system, what is the appropriate audience for a film.

The rating code warned of possible unsuitable scenes for younger viewers in “Batman Returns.” The fact that some parents choose to disregard this is not the responsibility of the film company, the director or the theater in which the film is being shown.
