Former Pueblo Cmdr. Lloyd (Pete) Bucher of San Diego is taking on a more serene profession these days.

Bucher this week is selling watercolors of seascapes, landscapes and animals for $40 to $550 at the Wyandotte Art Fair in suburban Detroit. His works included a picture of the Pueblo.

Bucher, 64, commanded the ship when it was captured in 1968 by North Korea. He and 83 of his men were freed after 11 months. One died and 17 were wounded.

The Pueblo had been gathering intelligence on North Korea. After the crew’s release, a Navy court of inquiry recommended a court-martial for Bucher, saying he violated Navy code about never giving up his ship. The finding was reduced to a letter of reprimand.

Bucher and his wife, Rose, were invited to the art fair by a friend in Wyandotte. Bucher retired in 1973 and started painting 12 years ago.
