Morgan, Unhappy With Change in Format, Is Leaving KMPC

Longtime KMPC morning radio personality Robert W. Morgan is switching stations.

Morgan’s last day at KMPC was Friday and he will start at KRTH-FM on Aug. 24, where he will be a morning disc jockey.

After KMPC went to a sports format on April 27, Morgan resisted and continued with a non-sports show, although without music. He acknowledged Friday that he has been uncomfortable with the sports format, and also said he was miscast once the station dropped music.

“I’ve always said I’m not a talk-show host,” Morgan said. “I’m a disc jockey who talks too much.”

Bill Ward, KMPC’s general manager, said Morgan hadn’t been happy at the station since the format change. “And we haven’t been too happy with him,” Ward said.

Said Morgan: “When I asked Bill Ward to let me out of my contract, it took him about a second to jump up and say ‘OK.’ ”

Morgan, who started in Los Angeles radio at KHJ in 1965, had two stints at KMPC, the first from 1975 to ’84 and the second since August of 1987.
