Marathon Oil Announces Layoffs: The Houston-based firm, a subsidiary of USX Corp. in Pittsburgh, laid off about 100 employees, mostly from its exploration and production units, the company said. Another 351 employees retired early, effective June 1. Those being laid off work at 16 locations in the United States. “Negative business conditions plague the petroleum industry, Marathon and the economy in general,” Marathon President Victor G. Beghini said. Marathon said that while asset sales or other operational changes may result in more job cuts, there are no plans for further major work force reductions.
