Tobacco Ruling

Share

Bravo to the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision on tobacco company liability. It is time to put the blame where it belongs: On the shoulders of the industry that spends billions each year promoting the only legal product which, when used as directed, can kill.

Some half a million Americans die every year from smoking and secondhand smoke. To replenish the loss of customers, tobacco companies are increasingly targeting new markets: women, children, Latinos and African-Americans.

The California Medical Assn. has chosen the goal of a “tobacco-free California by the year 2000” as one of its highest priorities. Physicians of the CMA will continue to push against tobacco use and promotion in the workplace and public areas, and to fight the tobacco industry in the Legislature and courts.
