A SPECIAL REPORT: OLYMPICS

Share

POOL PARTY: Orange County, with its productive club system, has had its biggest successes in swimming and diving. . . . Placentia’s Janet Evans won three swimming gold medals in 1988 and is back this year for more. And two of the best divers in Olympic history have county connections: Sammy Lee, later a Santa Ana ear, nose and throat specialist, in 1952 became the first male diver to win back-to-back gold; in 1988, Greg Louganis of Mission Viejo and UC Irvine--whom Lee coached for three years--became the first man to win both springboard and platform gold medals in consecutive Olympics.
