NEW YORK UPDATE: Clinton wasn’t the only candidate hoping to use the convention as a springboard: The Democratic contenders for the New York Senate seat now held by Republican Alfonse M. D’Amato scrambled for visibility during the proceedings. . . . Given the conclave’s emphasis on women candidates, former vice presidential nominee Geraldine A. Ferraro found herself frequently on camera. But her principal foe, New York Atty. Gen. Robert Abrams, received a boost when he obtained a federal court injunction against Operation Rescue, blocking the anti-abortion group from obstructing access to abortion clinics around town. . . . One of the other Senate candidates, black activist Al Sharpton, did not endear himself to party loyalists. He led a protest march to Clinton campaign headquarters.
