Chevron Pays $6.5 Million for Dumping Violations: The oil company pleaded guilty to 65 misdemeanor violations of the Clean Water Act stemming from the dumping of oil and grease off the Ventura County coast in the 1980s. Raymond Galvin, president of Chevron USA Production Co., handed a check for $6.5 million to U.S. District Judge Harry Hupp in Los Angeles. The violations occurred from 1982 to 1987 at an oil platform 12 miles southwest of Ventura. It was the third-largest criminal penalty assessed against a firm for violating environmental statutes. Chevron repeatedly discharged illegal amounts of toxic materials into the Pacific Ocean, then tried to cover up the dumping, the government charged.
