OXNARD : New Oxnard High Site to Be Discussed

Share

The board of the Oxnard High School District will hold a special meeting today to discuss how it would respond to any objections the city may have about the relocation site for Oxnard High School.

The board will meet at 11 a.m. today at the district’s main office at 309 South K St. to discuss the issue. The meeting is open to the public.

The Oxnard City Council’s staff has drafted a letter to the district recommending that Oxnard High School be relocated to a site at the northeast end of the city, rather than the northwest area as now planned. The council is expected to endorse the letter at its meeting today.

The letter states it would be financially prudent for the district to build on the northeast site because it is already in the process of acquiring the property for a seventh high school campus. Although the district has committed $9 million toward the new campus site, its plans were sidetracked in April when voters rejected a bond measure that would have paid for construction of the facility.

School officials said the relocation of Oxnard High School and the acquisition of a site for a seventh campus are two separate issues.

Acting Supt. William Studt said the district is already in line to receive funding for the relocation and construction of a new Oxnard High northwest of the city and that any changes now could jeopardize the project.

The district wants to relocate the high school because state officials have determined that its location is unsafe because of its proximity to Oxnard Airport.

Meanwhile, Studt said the district is still committed to acquiring the northeast site for a seventh campus.
