County Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder has been elected chairwoman of the Orange County/City Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Authority.

The joint powers authority was created in 1989 to provide emergency response to hazardous materials accidents in subscriber cities.

Wieder has served on the board since its inception and was voted chairwoman at its meeting last week.

The authority operates four HAZMAT response teams and distributes liability among its members on a “fair-share” basis.

The authority has also developed a system to retrieve the cost of a hazardous cleanup from the responsible party.

Four cities subscribe to the authority--Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Anaheim and Newport Beach.

Cities not in the authority must use private companies to clean up hazardous materials.

Wieder said she is concerned with hazardous materials, particularly toxic waste from households.

She spearheaded the establishment of the county’s Household Hazardous Materials Collection Center Program.
