PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Backup Simms Ends Holdout
Phil Simms ended a one-day holdout by signing a reported one-year contract that will pay him $1.6 million to be the New York Giants’ backup quarterback.
Simms, who missed the opening of training camp on Monday because he was not signed, refused requests for interviews on Tuesday after the team’s morning practice.
Jeff Hostetler, who won the job in training camp last year, has been named the starter by Coach Ray Handley, marking the first time that Simms won’t be given a chance to earn the starting spot in his 14 seasons with the club.
Washington Redskin receiver Ricky Sanders ended a one-day holdout by signing a two-year contract worth $1.9 million.
Sanders’ signing leaves the defending Super Bowl champions with 10 players, including quarterback Mark Rypien and No. 1 draft choice Desmond Howard, still without contracts.
Representatives of the American Indian Movement briefly delayed a welcoming parade for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are holding training camp at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. An AIM contingent of 15 joined in the parade and protested the team’s nickname as degrading to American Indians.
