Glendale : Asbestos Contract Awarded

Share

After a one-week delay, the Glendale Redevelopment Agency on Tuesday awarded a contract for $39,978 to A.W.S. Construction to remove asbestos and other hazardous materials from the historic Alex Theatre, which is to be converted into a performing arts center.

The agency had postponed action to obtain assurances from the contractor that the work will be performed at a price far lower than the city’s estimate of $230,300. Bids from three other contractors ranged from $70,741 to $127,400. City officials this week said the low bidder has agreed to stand by the original estimate.

Seats, lighting, air grills and other fixtures will be removed prior to the start of hazardous-materials work in order to prevent contamination, officials said. Renovation of the theater, at 216 N. Brand Blvd., is expected to cost $6.2 million and take about a year.
